Alive and still kicking

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve written anything. Exactly one week actually. That’s unusual. Let’s see, what do I have to tell all of you? Not much it seems…

I’ve started knitting again after taking time off since the Knitting Olympics. Some of you may remember the grey sweater with the neon green skull I had knit for my niece – the one she refuses to wear (and NO, it’s not because of the skull). I did do a little bit of knitting in the past few months including a baby blanket for a friend of mine, Jody, but nothing else substantial. Plus I wasn’t happy with the blanket. So, I’ve now got two projects on the go.

1. A shawl for myself (or possibly a Christmas present) – first attempt at lace and it’s going very well. You can find the pattern from KNITTY.COM ... HERE.
2. A new baby blanket for Jody. She and Roberto are expecting a boy in September. Wow, that’s coming up really REALLY fast. I’m trying the Big Bad Baby Blanket from Stitch ‘n Bitch again. This time however, just using one colour – dusty blue, and making an adjustment or two to the pattern.

I’ll try to post pics of both later this week.

Thanks to Krista for the idea on this one. Her post from Sunday pretty much summed up my feelings about sports at the moment. Take a minute to read it, it’s good. The off season is not my time of year. Summer sucks for sports (for me anyways). I don’t enjoy baseball; NASCAR and other car racing has never interested me; unless I’m playing, Golf bores me; and there are no Olympics this year.

Are you seriously that stupid? Ok, ok, ok. I shouldn’t blame just Mel. Although I really can’t stand him (well, except in the Bounty and Road Warrior). I understand that celebrities are under a lot of “pressure” (HA! Whatever…) and they’re constantly in the spotlight but shouldn’t that mean you need to be extra careful and responsible since the world is watching? However, his actions are just a reflection of the way North America is going right now. Consider how many “regular” people get arrested for DUI every day. I’m not saying we should bring back prohibition but what about tougher sentences for drunk drivers. Ooooh take away their license! Yeah, right – we all know that that doesn’t stop people. What about charging them and giving them real jail time. Or here’s one, how about attempted murder? That’s essentially what they’re doing each time they drink and get behind the wheel.

Before anyone jumps all over me for this one, I’d have to say that I should be included in this group. No, I don’t drink myself til I’m shitfaced and I tend to have a drink only once every few months. However, I will never forget the one time that I drove an hour home from a bar when I knew I probably shouldn’t have. As soon as I hit the highway, I knew I was taking a HUGE risk but drove home anyways. Stupidest thing I’ve ever done in my life. And as if driving in the RAIN on a small two lane highway in Ontario with no shoulder after drinking wasn’t enough to scare the crap out of me, when I got into town and stopped at the stoplight, who was facing me on the other side of the road? A cop. That did it – never again. Not to mention the fact that if my dad had caught me, I would have been driven to jail by him the minute I walked in the door. I feel very strongly about this. My uncle Billy was killed in a motorcycle accident when I was younger; I don’t know if it had anything to do with alcohol but he’s not around and I never got to know him (he had wicked long red hair…awesome dude from the pics I’ve seen). I’ve even called the cops on a friend of mine who left a party I threw and drove home. They didn’t find him that night and thankfully he didn’t hit anyone or hurt himself, but it was always a possibility.

I finally made a list of things I’d like to do before I die. You can view it HERE. Most of it involves travel and/or money. Oh well, theoretically I’ve still got a lot of time (30 years +…). A number of things listed on there I can do here in Edmonton (thank goodness) and I can do them anytime. Others will be ongoing for various lengths of time – most notably the books. As my faithful readers may remember, I had a blog about books that I was reading (I wanted to read 20 books in a year…or something like that). I’m working on books 11 and 12 right now but my new goal which I’ve got those 30 years to finish, is to read 1000 books. You can see the list of books HERE. Oh and if anyone out there remembers the title of the book I’m missing, please let me know! I seem to have forgotten it…and if I can’t remember, I’m just going to have to read one more book!

That’s it for now.
