More Respect for Zidane

Tuesday, July 11, 2006
I don't condone what happened during the World Cup final but my feelings towards Zizou has certainly changed in the past couple of days since the "Headbutt Heard Round the World". Apparently Materazzi has admitted that he insulted Zidane during the game but claims that he did not call him a terrorist (he claims to be "not cultured" and doesn't know the meaning of the word...yeah, right). Materazzi said that it was nothing that he hadn't heard before playing football and couldn't understand why Zidane reacted the way he did. Now while doing some research online today, I discovered that Materazzi is not what anyone would call "an angel" when he plays. Some British and Brazilian media outlets (paper/television) hired lip readers and Italian translators who came up with a number of accounts of what was said. The most popular being something about Zidane's mother and/or sister. My personal favourite was that when Materazzi held his shirt, it's been reported that he pinched Zizou's nipple who then told that it wasn't hard enough for him (or something along those lines...) and then of course the stuff about mothers/terrorists/etc. Zidane's agents/spokespeople have said that he'll be making a statement later this week. I can't wait to see what he's got to say regarding what happened.

I'll never forget the look on Zidane's face after the headbutt when he was talking with Buffon, the Italian goalkeeper. He looked on the verge of tears as Buffon seemed to try and comfort him. He knew what he had done and what was going to happen. It's a shame that this was how he had to end such a stellar career. Au revoir Zizou. We will miss you.
