Training Update

Walked home after work tonight although I am still about 700 pages behind in my reading of Don Quixote...nuts, the party is tomorrow! I certainly could have used the bus ride to work my way through a good 25 more pages. Oh well. At least I know I won't be the only one who doesn't finish.

I was waffling about walking home (see above) but decided that since my walking clinic begins on Monday, I should probably try and get a few walks in before then. Plus my rubenesque figure could use a tiny bit of toning. Normally it takes me about 45 minutes to walk home. It's about 2.5 - 3 km. That's a bit behind my race walking speed but I'm usually carrying a heavy back pack full of books, shoes, clothes and empty lunch dishes. It was a very nice day here in Edmonton, not too hot with some big puffy clouds for shade and a slight breeze. Decided to push it just a little bit more and really stretch my legs, rather than my usual short stumpy walk.

Well, I managed to knock about 7 minutes off of my time!!!! Made it home in approximately 38 minutes. I felt great! I could certainly feel the difference in my legs as I took a longer stride, I really felt like I was racing! I can't wait for Monday night!

In other news, Ron James is coming to Edmonton in October. He has to be one of the funniest people I have ever seen. While I'd love to go, my brother and I have decided to get our dad tickets for him and his wife to go and see Ron's show. I talked to my dear pop this evening and he was thrilled when I suggested it to him. It's going to be their Christmas present and it sounds like they'll likely make a weekend out of it and stay in a hotel. Woo hoo! One present down... thank goodness we started exchanging names at Christmas (the size of our Christmas gatherings, including close friends and family is now at about 12 and it keeps growing each year).

** EDIT: I lay in bed last night after posting this thinking perhaps that the walk home wasn't 3 km. That would mean I was averaging 12.66 min/km and it seemed a bit fast for me. Well, it is faster than what I've been doing lately but it is right on time with my "race" pace - I usually finish a 5K walk in 55 - 60 minutes which would make the pace I was doing yesterday right on the money!

That's an inspired Christmas present! So much more meaningful than some potpouri.

Oh what a great gift, Ron James is so funny...especially in concert a whole other kind of funny.

Great walking! I walk casually 4km an hour. If really walking 5km an hour. any faster and my flip flops give me blisters...

How was your Dq party? Hm, that sounds like ice cream...well I wonder how many folks finished it? It's a huge book to try to read in a hurry. Maybe you all will talk about what you've read so far and extend the reading and discussion time?
