Ms. Pacman was, like, totally, a Square Peg, to the max

During my morning internet rounds, checking my email, the news, seeing what’s happening in the world today, I happened across an article from the site under a column they have, Stuck in the 80’s. It was entitled Top 10 Worst Movies of the 80s (aka Stallone Appreciation Day). For those who don’t want to read through the opinions and write ups, here is the list:

10. Absolute Beginners
9. Yentl
8. Cobra
7. Heartbeeps
6. The Pirate Movie
5. Defcon-4
4. Rhinestone
3. Ishtar
2. Over the Top
1. Gymkata

Now, I’ll agree that ole Sly has made some pretty rotten movies and certainly deserves to be on this list. However, I have two objections.

- The Pirate Movie. Are you serious? This was hilarious! Sure the career of the cast members basically went nowhere – Kristy McNicol was on that Golden Girls spinoff for a while but does anyone other than me remember the lipsync contest/show that Christopher Atkins had for perhaps a single season? I loved this movie – it was a cheesy musical not meant to be taken seriously. I don’t think it gets nearly the respect it deserves.

- Gymkata. I can’t remember how many times I rented this movie – it was a lot. Sure the premise was unbelievable. But isn’t that what movie making is about? Who wants to see “real life”…I go to the movies for “reel life”. Definitely another movie with a high “fromage” factor but if you don’t take it seriously, you’ll enjoy it!

Reading this list got me thinking about my favourite movies from the 1980s. Be warned! These are far from the “BEST” movies of the 80s but rather, ones that I could watch over and over again, enjoying them for exactly what they were, pure entertainment.

Conan the barbarian (not destroyer…that sucked)
And just because my big brother is letting me borrow his car tomorrow, one of his all-time favourites … Hawk the Slayer.

I can't remember what decade a movie was from! I've been through too many decades, they all blend together after a while.

I totally remember the Pirate Movie. It was hilarious! I still watch Christmas Vacation every year - it's a classic! Conan the Barbarian...oh...those were the days: when Arnold was really, really terrible as opposed to merely bad.
