Murder Capital of Canada

Thursday, November 09, 2006
According to Statistics Canada, Edmonton is the Murder Capital of Canada. Last year there were 4 .29 murders per every 100,000 people in the city in 2005. Ok sure, for the Americans out there that doesn't seem like a lot but consider the size of our population. There are more people in California than in our whole country. So the number of murders we're having is pretty big. However , it's not the first time Edmonton has had this dubious distinction. I'm pretty sure that we were the murder capital of the country a few years ago. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact that there's no housing at all and we have about 5000 homeless people at the moment?

On a funnier note, Ralph Klein, Alberta's outgoing premier is under fire for yet another comment he made at a dinner last night. This one is actually not his own, original piece of work. It was actually written by one of his female communications officers. Speaking about Belinda Stronach's flip last year from the PC's to Liberals, Klein said he wasn't surprised.

I don't think Belinda ever did have a conservative bone in her body...well, just one. Speaking of Peter Mckay...

Have another drink, uncle Ralphie. I may not like his politics but frankly I'm going to miss that man.

Congratulations Edmonton! You finally beat out Winnipeg!

Calgary's homeless are not getting any breaks either. There are huge debates raging now, as all the shelters are overflowing, over whether to allow a slated-for-destruction warehouse to be used as temporary housing. But naturally the warehouse is too close to a residential area, and heaven knows we can't have that!

I hate to admit it, but I too will miss the gems that come out of Ralph's mouth.

I suppose it's all relative - we have loads of murders her, but we have loads of people 60million in a space a little bit bigger than Vancouver Island. Unfortunately, when the murder rate gets so high, you tend to just accept it when people get killed every day.

Nice quote. I love a little bit of spite to get me through the day.

wow, so few? here in south bend our murder rate is 19.4 per 100,000

We need some politicians here who provide comic relief like that!

I'm laughing at the politicians comment! We had a higher up that Washington did very immaginative manuevers to get re-elected (Barbara Cubin) who on national media threatened to slap an opponent who happened to have MS and was sitting in a wheel chair. Good thing they weren't in Edmunton, those statistics might have kicked in - well, hmmm come to think of it, we have 5 people per square mile.

You have more murders than Van. What an accomplishment. Mind you, in watching the news on a regular basis there seems to be a lot of crime in Edmonton, plus all those missing prostitutes. Sad.

That was a pretty tasteless remark about Belinda. They never make remarks like that about men, I notice.
