Pompeii - The Movie

Seems that Roman Polanski is working on a new movie based on Robert Harris' book POMPEII. Polanski, other than being famous for his wife Sharon Tate who was murdered by Charles Manson's followers, and fleeing the US to avoid going to prison for the statuatory rape of a 13 year old girl, directed such movies as Chinatown (Jack Nicholson's nose...), Rosemary's Baby (one of the creepiest movies ever), the Pianist, and one of my favourites, Pirates. Robert Harris is also currently writing a trilogy entitled Imperium based on the life of Cicero. Considering the success of HBO's ROME which is currently airing season II, and the success of Harris' books, it is likely to do well.

Did anyone else know that Apollo games had designed (or were designing) a "Pompeii" video game for Atari? Unfortunately the graphics look nothing like the box cover.

Growing up there were two mini-series that I remember enjoying. A.D. (1985) and The Last Days of Pompeii. Granted if you watched these today, they would likely seem cheesey and poorly done but at the time though they were fantastic. I guess it's sort of the same with the original Battlestar Galactica. A.D. was also turned into a book which I must admit that I enjoyed a bit more than the mini series. During the '90s my mother introduced me to a series of historical fiction called Masters of Rome by Colleen McCullough. She takes some licence but generally her books are extremely well researched. So much so that she was awarded a Doctor of Letters by Macquarie University in 1993. She is also responsible for The Thorn Birds which I've never watched or read.

The Thornbirds is pretty good - both the book and the mini-series. I haven't read anything else by her, though.
