Protest Down Under

Friday, February 16, 2007
Found at CNN's Offbeat Photo's section:

An activist sucks on the teats of a cow replica as part of Animal Liberation Victoria's "Milk Sucks" campaign in Melbourne, Australia. The demonstration aims to increase public awareness of the environmental dangers of dairy farming.

That title takes on a whole new meaning...

As with some advertising, I'm not too sure that I get the connection, other than it would be hard to crawl in and sneak and teat in a dairy? - milk has been freaking me out lately anyway - I've been hearing of cows with abcesses being milked and the pus goes to our milk, wrrrraaaaack, blllllk.

Protest Down Udder?

Whenever I can (ie, whenever it's available), I buy organic milk. I have heard what Gardenia mentions too. It's horrifying for us, the consumers, but it's also tragic for the cows. In addition, I have heard tales of male calves being left to starve because the dairy industry can't afford to let them have their mothers' milk.

Whenever humans and animals interact, you bet there are going to be stories of utter abuse and exploitation. The way we treat animals makes me ashamed of being a human.

Have you heard about the avian flu outbreak at one of the biggest (probably THE biggest) turkey farmer's in the UK? 160,000 birds had to be killed because some idiot imported diseased turkeys from Hungary.

And that is another thing that gets my goat: is there really need to ferry live animals across a continent, in the appalling conditions in which they are transported?
