Spend or Save?

I have a plan. Or at least I had one. I'm trying to save money to pay off some bills and to hopefully take a vacation (first since 1991) just about anywhere that requires a passport. I know that I should find a part time job but, as with many things in my life, I'm terribly fussy/picky. Luckily, I'm able to be a bit finicky at the moment - Edmonton is fortunate (in a sense) to currently have a shortage of service workers so there are lots of cashier/waitress/clerk jobs out there - I'll find something that suits me soon.

The savings/not spending idea, however, is not working out so well. I'm making some decent sized payments on the old credit cards but there always seems to be something that I "need". Clothes (as always) for work and home, knickers, new bras, etc. I also remembered that I had promised to buy my mother a new pair of running shoes (decent ones) this spring so that she will not destroy her feet and ankles when we do our marathon. They certainly aren't cheap. I'm also going to have to get some light summer socks, a new hat, running shorts (yes, that means spandex...) and a waist belt for keys/water bottle. Yikes! And now something new to add to the list has reared it's head. I want to take a class.

I've come to the conclusion that I need to get out a bit more. Not that I want to be a social butterfly but it couldn't hurt to have something regular to do once or twice a week for a month or two. Metro College offers a pretty wide range of continuing education classes and I've found four that I would really like to take. Obviously can't do all of them but two would be great :-) My choices at the moment are:
- Belly Dancing (sexy)
- Flamenco (no partner needed!)
- Russian (for beginners - could cross something else off my To Do list this year)
- Medieval/Renaissance Swordmanship for Beginners (tee hee, I'm really jonesing for this one!)

What's a girl to do? I'm guessing checking the want ads would be the first step...

Hey there,

Can I assume the dishwashing thing didn't pan out (pun intended - hahaha!). I'm the same: trying to put money away but always needing thing. Being a woman sucks sometimes, doesn't it? Bras, knickers...I'm always buying something I need. Very nice of you to buy shoes for your mom! Some things are an investment, though, so look at it that way.

I vote for belly dancing, i expect an U-Tube video! Actually I'D travel to Edmonton to see that!

As for the sword thing, women with weapons scare me a lot.

My vote is for belly dancing. I've always wanted to do that. Got a DVD on how to do it as well.

Good luck with the second job thing - we are in the same boat.
