Dickens' World

Monday, April 16, 2007
Following in the footsteps of Walt Disney and Dolly Parton, it seems that the great Charles Dickens will be getting his own theme park. Dickens’ World will not only include themed-rides complete with brown murky water, reconstructions of Newgate prison and other buildings, but also “smells and mist”. Ooooh the smell of Victorian-era London slums! No thanks, I’ll pass. Perhaps it’s a British thing. Frankly I’d rather have to run down Jasper Avenue naked than try to make my way through one of his books. Ok, maybe not naked but you get the idea…I’m not a fan (although Mickey’s Christmas Carol is a standard at Christmas time).

Dickens World will actually be only a few miles from where we live, so I shall feel obliged to have a look once it's up and running. But I must agree with you... just who is this theme park aimed at?! Where is the audience for it?

Ditto what the missus said.

It sounds like a good idea for a festival or something but not a permanent thing. (I adore Dickens but I don't see the Magwitch-inspired boat ride being a huge, ongoing tourist draw).

Ah, yes. We were rather alarmed by this when it was mentioned at book group last night. I'm not sure it'll be seeing my money!

Do you have to take on Dickensian names? He came out with some bloody corkers.
