Amy Winehouse

Where the heck have I been that I don't know who she is? Chances are, someone hip like Barbara has already mentioned her and I wasn't paying attention... Thank god for that idiot Jian Ghomeshi on CBC Radio's Q. Some days I wish he'd go back to sweeping the turf at Skydome (there's a reference for all you 30-something Canucks... what was the name of the band and the song?) but every once in a while he plays something decent. Ok this is actually only the second time he's amazed me. The first time was A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke (amazing!) and now this little ditty by Amy Winehouse. I really have to start paying more attention to pop culture or I'll be left behind.

I'd never heard of her, either. That song was way annoying.

I'll take 30-something as a compliment! Moxy Fruvous'King of Spain.

Actually it was Mellowlee who was the hipster who had Amy Winehouse up already, but again, I'll take the compliment.

There's some mean folks on the internetz who are now referring to Amy's British teeth by changing the song to "they tried to make me go to the dentist, I said no no no". Which is actually kinda funny.

Not a big fan, though I have had her first album on the iPod for a couple of years. Some good tracks; some very bad tattoos. Recently married.

As much as I didn't like this track when I first heard it a few months ago, there's something catchy about it.

Yeh, there is something catchy about it. I love her voice, there's something compelling. However, I flashed back to Janis Joplin, another brilliant musician who had much to give and who crashed to her death.

Yeh, unfortunately our culture is no stranger to the message of this song. Just coming out of that small town and knowing whose kid was in rehab, whose kid wasn't but should be, and all the adults in political places who somehow managed to look like they didn't need rehab - this could be a theme song! I hope she makes it to sing about living!
