The Great Rosie Debate

Friday, May 25, 2007
I've tried to keep my "Celebrity Blogging" to a minimum the past month or so. The more lip service (or, in this case, finger service...um...?) we give celebrities and their crazy antics, the more we're encouraging their behaviour and supporting that of the tabloids and papparazzi. However, something happened the other day that I felt strongly enough to blog about it. What am I talking about you ask? The feud that's arisen between Rosie O'Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselback, co-hosts on The View.

Earlier this week, Rosie was talking about the ongoing war in Iraq and asked what I felt was a rhetorical question. What was the question? From a supposedly official transcript that was shown, in part, on Rosie's own personal blog:

ROSIE: 655,000 Iraqi civilians are dead. Who are the terrorists ... 655,000 Iraqis — I’m saying you have to look, we invaded –
HASSELBECK: Wait, who are you calling terrorists now? Americans?
ROSIE: I’m saying if you were in Iraq, and the other country, the United States, the richest in the world, invaded your country and killed 655,000 of your citizens, what would you call us?

What followed was a five minute, uninterrupted by commericals, fight between the VERY Republican Hasselback and the VERY Democratic O'Donnell. It eventually dissolved into a somewhat personal attack on both parts. Rosie has since asked to be let out of her contract early (it was to end in June) and the show has agreed. She will not be back on The View.

Some of you might be wondering who the heck is Elisabeth Hasselbeck and what is she doing on The View. Fair enough. I wondered too how she got the gig seeing as how the only thing I know her from is season 2 (Austraila) of Survivor and apparently she's married to some football player or something... From what I've seen, she's generally fairly quiet, very religious, and a Bush supporter (can you tell I already don't like her?). Rosie, as most of you know, is a stand up comedian, actress, gay rights activist and had her own television show. She's notoriously outspoken and certainly not afraid to share her views.

I've never been a big fan of Rosie's but she had her moments. I'll never forget when she had Tom Selleck on her show (The Rosie O'Donnell Show) and "attacked" him (for lack of a better word) about his views on gun control - I believe he was representing the NRA in some capacity at the time. I loved it. She pulled absolutely no punches. While I don't feel that you should have to defend your personal views to anyone, if you choose to (especially as a celebrity) to support a cause and act as a representative of a particular organization, you had better be prepared to stand up and fight for your cause. Mr. Selleck tried unsuccessfully to avoid her questions and he came off as a bit of an idiot in my opinion.

Back to the fight. I'm definately on Rosie's side on this one. You can see it via YouTube below. The fight between Rosie and Elisabeth, who SURPRISE compares the war to a football game, starts at about the 5 minute mark (it's about a 10 minute clip) but you should watch the whole thing as there's some interesting things between Elisabeth and Joy Behar, another of the co-hosts.

Despite her protestations to the contrary, Elisabeth never really says anything of consequence. I'm disappointed that Rosie will be leaving The View (although I work during the day and don't watch it). It's nice to have people out there who are willing to speak their mind on television about "hot topics" including politics, religion, gay rights, and the war. Sadly, those that would prefer people like her not speak out have won yet another battle by her deciding not to return. Or perhaps I should say, they scored a touch down - that's putting it in terms that Hasselbeck would actually understand.

Of course this made the CTV news last night, which is where I saw it. I never liked The View to begin with, though I am a Rosie fan and did watch a bit of it when she was on. Like you, I cannot understand what Elisabeth Hasselback is doing on this show. Not that I care a big deal, though.

Here is some info on Elisabeth.

I wanted to see what her education and possible credentials are, and it looks like she pretty well doesn't have any.

Oh, this a.m. I caught a clip of the Hassleback thing - I thought, what a fitting name, then as I voiced my dislike of the blond loudmouth (didn't know she was shy to start with) my husband tried to re-educate me. I know Rosie is mouthy - don't always agree with her - but who the blank is this blond bubblehead, who is more worried about football than thousands of lives snuffed for the power of OIL? Huh?
