Maternity Leave - The Big Scam

Tuesday, July 03, 2007
I think maternity leave has to be the biggest scam in the world. Parents and parents-to-be have got it made.

Think about it. You decide to get pregnant (or ... ooops! you're pregnant) and have a baby. A choice that you make in your PERSONAL life. It has nothing to do with your job, your place of employment, or your employer. However!!! Your employer gives you PAID TIME OFF from your job. Excuse me? Granted you don't get your full pay but you still get paid for not coming into work... Seriously, am I the only one who finds this just a tad bit ridiculous? In Canada, maternity leave applies to both the mother or the father. Either can take "parental leave" before/after the birth or adoption of a new baby.

What do the rest of us get? Us "nonbreeders" either by choice or nature? I don't get to take time off (unless I use my vacation time) when I adopt a new pet. Speaking of vacation time, why can't I get extra days off because I have chosen NOT to have children. No kids means no time off with them when they get sick, when they start school, when they're on summer vacation, or can't get a babysitter. And no paid maternity leave. Doesn't that entitle me to a little something extra? I'm saving my employer a lot of lost time and money because I'm not popping out a little screaming "bundle of joy".

And what about those of us left behind when said employee (mother/father/partner) takes their maternity leave? We're often responsible for having to train the employee's temporary replacement (and yes, I've been the replacement once before) or, god forbid, they don't have a replacement for the employee leaving ("temporarily") and the remaining staff have to take up the slack of that person. All because they felt this overwhelming need to procreate.

Now before you jump down my throat about this issue and think that I'm anti-kids, you should know that I'm not. Friends and family members have had children over the past few years and I love them all. Kids are adorable, and yes, if people didn't give birth our species would eventually die out. But you should also know that I never plan on having kids of my own, and I believe there are far too many people in the world today, especially a shitload of "unwanted" kids in orphanages or in foster care that would love for a family to adopt them (ooooh but no one wants a kid over the age of 5, everyone wants a new baby....).

Just because you have the ability to have a baby doesn't necessarily mean you should (but that's a WHOLE other can of worms). My point, in case you haven't figured it out? Why should you get all this special treatment and privileges just because you have a baby, and I get nothing because I don't? Man, life is unfair...

Not all jobs give you maternity leave. The thousands of people who work as trust employees at many universities get nothing. Most don't have a pension plan either.

God, don't even get me started on this. What a crock. And it's the same for smokers. They seem perfectly justified in popping out for a quick ciggie, while non-smokers remianed chained to their desk/counter/whatever. Everyone's a bastard!

Agree with Barbara. Many get EI, which is something they've paid into all their working lives.

Agree with * re. the smoking thing. THAT always kills me!

Maternity leave is basic Communism. Joseph Stalin guaranteed it in his Soviet Constitution of 1936. Everyone forgets this.
