Predictions

With the impending release of the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series, there's plenty of prediction out there about what's going to happen. The author, J.K. Rowling, has already told us that she's planning on killing off two characters in this book and much of the speculation surrounds who it might be. Personally, I feel that it's going to be Harry and Voldemort.

As disappointing as it might be for some, I can't see her being able to realistically end the series any other way. Think about it. If she wimps out and kills off Hermione or Ron, or a lesser character, many readers are going to be disappointed (including myself). I realize that many of the younger readers might get upset by Harry's death but I can't see her being able to end the series without it.

CBC Radio's Sounds Like Canada had a couple of authors of children's books on the program yesterday and they both said pretty much the same thing. Mind you they also said a number of other things that I found surprising, including that neither of them believed Rowling's story of sitting on the train and suddenly having the entire story pop into her head, and that they both felt there were major plot/character problems with the books that could have been corrected if she had had a focus group of kids review the book before it was published.

Now, I'm not a HUGE Potter fan. At first I had no desire to read the books or see the first movie when it came out but my roommate at the time offered to take me to see it because she didn't want to go alone. It was pretty good and that got me interested. However, I'm not going to be one of those crazy Potter freaks that stand in line (in costume) for the midnight release of the book or to be first in line for the next movie. I'm curious though as to how the rest of you think might the series might end. Predictions?

I am certifiably a HUGE Harry Potter fan. I have been counting down the releases of the new movie and book since the moment I heard their release dates. The fact that you posted something about Harry Potter practically made me wet myself with excitement. Seriously.

I could speculate for HOURS and HOURS, but I have not been afforded such time. Nevertheless, I do agree that both Harry and Voldemort are going to die. It fits perfectly with the prophecy and Rowling's assertions that it will indeed be the final book. Other things to ponder:
-the remaining Horcruxes? Did he really make seven? How many have already been destroyed? Is Harry a Horcrux (a little far-fetched, it would have to be inadvertently, of course, but it would fit nicely with both him and Voldemort biting the bullet)?
-the fate of RAB (Regulus Black, Sirius' brother)?
-the actual fate of Sirius?
-Lupin + Greyback? I have this sneaking suspicion that Draco will become a werewolf.
-Snape: good or evil? I have a friend who's convinced he's bad, but there's just no way - NO WAY!

I really could go on forever.

I'm surprised by my interest in and enjoyment of Potter, as it's not at all my usual taste. But the whole series feels so instantly classic that it's a joy to watch such a phenomenon in action.

I think Harry will live. Ron had better watch out, though.
