Rogers? WTF...

Does anyone else out there use Rogers Video Direct online rental service? It's similar to Netflix in the States. I was recently informed that two movies have been shipped to me (yee haw): House of Sand and Fog & The Village (which will be next week’s Dinner and A Movie selection).

Now, I’m excited as I’ve yet to see either film. That’s always a plus. They also star two very talented actors: that sexy beast himself, Ben Kingsley (I believe he’s a “Sir” now) and Joaquin Phoenix. An extra bonus. And sure, I know that The Village received some pretty shoddy reviews but I don’t care. I enjoy a little Shyamalan now and then.

My problem is their system for determining which movies to send. As you can see from the picture below, the top three movies in my list are all available right now! If I wanted to, I could click on the GHI button and get them sent to me right away for a small fee (on top of my monthly fees). Granted, I did check off that availability was more important to me than the actual order of my list. If Apocalypto or Black Coffee were showing as not immediately available, I wouldn’t have a problem with them sending a title further down the list. But they’re there! Waiting for me to pay an additional $4 to get them ASAP! Arrrggghhh.

(sorry for the crappy resolution...)

All in all I’m not really that upset. No, really, I’m not. Haven’t you realized yet that I just like to complain sometimes? Sheesh. Being a Captain is hard work you know! It does mean that my five selections a month are pretty much a crap shoot and you never know what you’ll end up with until it arrives (or you check your list). And everyone likes a surprise, right?

As mentioned, Dinner and A Movie this Tuesday will be The Village and we’re likely feasting on chicken and veggie kabobs, rice, and some sort of greenish salad. I figured the skewers would come in handy if mom is freaked out on the way home, she could use them to defend herself. I’m expecting a call from the police later that evening…

I enjoyed The Village...may be a little slow moving, but I thought it was kind of cool. Never saw HOSAF...but read the book a few years ago and thought it was a good set of characters. Look forward to your reviews.

HOSAF was not bad actually, pretty intense in places; The Village was okay, too. Trouble with Shyamalan is you spend the whole time knowing there's a twist and trying to work it out. I worked this one out very quickly (honest), but it didn't really spoil it for me.

Our rental place is kinda the same. You never know what's gonna come and when. We keep as few titles as poss on it (under 20), so we don't get sent dross that we are ambivalent about. We also don't have the option for earlier delivery for a fee. Frankly I wouldn't take advantage of it anyway.

I though The Village rocked, actually. I just downloaded it so I can watch it whenever I want. I'm not the biggest Shyamalan fan, but I thought this movie was thematically very strong. I haven't seen the other movie, though I love Ben Kingsley. Haven't used Rogers's service.
