The Fall/Autumn Reading Challenge

Hmmm. What to do? What to do?

As mentioned, Wandering Coyote had suggested that once the Summer Reading Challenge is over, we have a Fall / Autumn Reading Challenge. As a chick who loves to read and practically has a big “O” every time she walks into a book store, I’m all for it. But the question now is what format should it take?

I’ve given this a little bit of thought although not as much as it deserves given that fall is almost upon us and therefore we have to get our butts in gear. We could just keep the same format as we have for the summer reading challenge. Make a list (not written in stone) of the books you’d like to read within whatever time frame we come up with and see how you do – keeping in mind to enjoy the books, not rush, and include a variety of topics/plots. Sure. Not bad, worked for the summer. But what else could we do…

There was the idea that we could all read the same book, like a book club, but getting people to commit could be difficult (ahem…anyone out there remember Don Quixote...I won’t name names but…). After that, I begin to think that we could recommend a book to a specific fellow blogger and ask them to read it sometime during the Fall Challenge. This could be iffy as we all have very different tastes in books (and music, movies, etc). I know personally that if I don’t particularly enjoy the book I’ve started reading or it doesn’t grab me within the first chapter or two, I’ll stop reading. Full stop.

What about the possibility of a reading/book blog carnival? I’m sure some of you have taken part in a blog carnival before. From what I gather, you write up a post (or use one you’ve posted in the past), submit the link to whomever is hosting the carnival and that person will, on a preset date, post the links on their blog directing visitors to the various write ups. What does everyone else out there think?

My idea (so far) is this: we each submit a list of perhaps 5 books to read over the rest of September, October and November (September 4 – November 30). We can either choose which one of our own books to review or have another blogger decide which one we write about? I’m seeing blogger names in one hat, book titles in another… It’s all very up in the air at the moment. I’m certainly open to other ideas, and as it was originally WC’s idea to have the Fall Challenge, perhaps she has some fabulous ideas about what to do for the autumn months?

I've never heard of a blog carnival. We could do a group book blog, however. That might be fun. What do you think?

I'll have to get a list together. I actually have one, but on it are books I'll need to get interlibrary loans for, which might take time.

Sept. 4 - Nov. 30 sounds like a good time frame, too.

Sounds good to me, too - it'll get me reading before I start school next year!
