I have long been concerned about where my milk comes from. Although this growth hormone is banned in the UK (according to the map shown in this footage), cows here are still hooked up to machines for far longer than is healthy for them (and, in turn, us), and kept in a perpetual state of pregnancy so they can produce milk year-round.

Like most issues related to animal welfare, it sucks. I have started buying organic milk produced by free-range cows, but in all honesty I don't know if these words that we love so much (organic! free range!) mean anything at all. Maybe they are just a clever marketing ploy to get people with animal and environmental concerns to spend more money...

That's hilarious in only the way Colbert's show can be.

Of course there's a little more to the story since in order for cows to keep producing milk they must also be kept pregnant... the veal industry. Calves are taken away immediately after birth and prepped for veal consumption.

While I knew about BGH prior to be vegan and the possibility of pus being in milk (pasturization doesn't get rid of it), it was the veal production side of it that was the last straw.
