I Heart Dancing Boy

Thursday, September 06, 2007
I finally had a celebrity sighting! I'm ashamed to admit that I had forgotten all about it until this morning. Do you remember when I mentioned Edmonton's very own Dancing Boy? For those of you who may not know, he's a young man who is constantly seen on the sidewalks of various intersections in the west end (usually around 178th street) and, you guessed it, he dances. He's not a great dancer but he doesn't care. He's just filled by the music in his earphones and let's it move him. Well, I finally saw him.

While out shopping on Sunday with the family, we stopped at an intersection behind the Superstore. Who did we see dancing away on the corner? None other than Dancing Boy himself. Did you know that he's got a fan club on Facebook? And it has over 4500 members!!! I'm stunned. In case you didn't catch it the first time, here's the clip from one of the local television stations (now available on YouTube). Warning, the reporter, Paul Brown is a bit of an idiot and CityTV (formerly A-Channel) is not exactly known for the quality of it's reporting. The report which aired on CFRN was much better but no longer available online.

Ha! Greatness. Every town needs characters like that.

We have "No Hands Guy" who does little tricks on his old bicycle without, you guessed it, using his hands. I think there's some social awareness purpose to it all, but only in his mind. The rest of us realize he's nuts.

Hmm, we don't have anybody cool like that. Well, there is the Tuesday guy who does the paper recycling at work and tells everyone it's Tuesday.

Reporter Dude should have left his shirt on. Zikey.

My hometown had a roller skater guy in a pink tu-tu. I love what they add to local culture.
