Congratulations! You’re Cancer Free!

Thursday, October 04, 2007

“Unfortunately, it seems you never had cancer to begin with and we regret to inform you that the double mastectomy you’ve just undergone wasn’t necessary! Thanks for visiting our hospital and have a pleasant day.”

While not the exact words used by hospital staff, you can just imagine the reaction a 30-something woman in the US had when her doctor told her that there had been
a mix up with her lab results. It seems that her lab results were confused with that of another woman who DID have cancer. The woman who underwent the unnecessary surgery has launched a lawsuit against the lab who undertook the testing. If there was ever a justifiable, multi-million dollar lawsuit, this has to be it. No word on the woman who actually DID have cancer or her status.

The truly frightening thing is that this isn’t an isolated incident. Seems that another woman underwent
a similar experience (and unnecessary surgery) back in 2005. Always, ALWAYS remember to get a second opinion and a second set of lab work done. I’m speechless.

In happier news, the Oilers home-opener is tonight against the San Jose sharks.

I'm pretty much speechless as well. Unbelievable.

I thought this sort of thing only happened in English hospitals. Yikes. What this woman had to go through is bad enough, but the other woman, blissfully living her life unaware that there's something wrong... that just doesn't bear thinking about.
