Best Birthday Meal Ever

Saturday, January 12, 2008
I'm stuffed. I just got back from the best birthday meal ever. Whew. Now I need a nap. David along with wife and kids, and Grannie Dawn, took me to The Blue Plate Diner in downtown Edmonton for my birthday dinner. Oh my god. It was absolutely fabulous. Each one of us (except the kids who didn't eat the crusts on their grilled cheese's), polished every last bite on their plates...an unusual feat. Ok, Ok, I admit I left about three bites of my curried chick peas (A MUST TRY!) but that's because I had a starter caesar salad to begin. The curried chickpeas with saffron rice and grilled veggies (done to perfection) were indescribable. They were THAT good. The salad was the also the best caeser I've tried. Rather than parmasen, it came topped with asiago (mmmm) and the dressing wasn't overly garlicky but rather had a red pepper tang to it. Absolutely fabulous.

Dave had dead ground up cow on a bun and did everything but "lick the plate" as our overly perky waiter joked. Chandra had the roasted pepper which was served on couscous and stuffed with a bean/mushroom ragout. MMmmm. Grannie Dawn went with the chili garlic stirfry with shrimp and I swear that she did lick her plate but I have no real proof.

BIG thanks to Dave for deciding on where to go for dinner. I've been wanting to try this place out for months. Apparently the veggie burger (which I almost went for) is fantastic. They make it themselves (no premade stuff here!) and it contains no soy or mushrooms...I think I'm in heaven. And get this, it's made with beets! Among other things. I'm getting it the next time I go which I'm hoping is really really soon. I'm sure I can convince the ladies in the office to head there for our next outing.

We topped off the meal with a round of desserts - the nephew and I split the blueberry cheesecake, the niece had the caramel cheesecake, Dave and Chandra split the chocolate raspberry torte, and mom had the beet cake. Yes, that's what I said. Beet cake. It's exactly like carrot cake but made with beets. Personally, I didn't care for it but everyone else loved it.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is eclectic: bare brick walls, open ceiling, mismatched furniture and paintings from all local artists cover the walls. The staff are friendly, service was pretty good, and the food fabulous. Much of the menu is vegetarian (but not vegan) as the owners are both vegetarians but they do serve a number of chicken, beef, or seafood dishes so there's something for everyone. Located in the heart of downtown, this is a great restaurant. If you're ever in Edmonton and looking for somewhere to eat, head to the Blue Plate Diner.

Happy Birthday! I'm so glad you had such a great meal.
If I'm ever in Edmonton (there's a pretty big marathon there) I'd definitely like to try that veggie burger that sounds very good.

Happy birthday, Cap'n!
This is my favourite restaurant!! You have to try their veg "meatloaf" sometime...the miso gravy is awesome. I've been trying to make even the palest imitation of it...and no luck so far. Their veggieburgers are fabulous too. I've taken meat-eaters there a couple times and everybody loves it.
