I popped by the post office today to ship off a parcel overseas. Much to my shock and horror (and that of at least one other customer), the price of shipping via Airmail has increased. You see, Air Canada and WestJet have recently added a fuel surcharge to all of their ticket prices. It was only a matter of time given the price of fuel these days. However, if you want to send a parcel to anywhere that requires it to fly, you're going to pay a tad bit more than you used to. Egads! Sure it might get there quicker but if it's not a rush (ie: for a special occasion), you're better off sending it via "surface" mail. What does that mean you ask? Surface mail is exactly that - it's shipped on the surface (it doesn't fly). Yep, my little parcel full of goodies is taking a boat across the mighty Atlantic Ocean to reach it's destination...I'm glad there aren't any perishables!!! However, this doesn't bode well for my holiday parcels. I'll definately have to start knitting very, VERY soon just to ensure there's plenty of travel time!

My RO sent a parcel to Norway via surface and it took about 3 months to get there. You are quite sure there's nothing perishable in there?

Yeah, our local post office said it would take the best part of two months for surface mail to Canada and the US... Better get knitting, girl! :D

ah well....bon voyage, little parcel. wonder if it will end up on a cruise ship instead of freighter? deck chairs, stage shows, meals galore.

very strange that ships haven't put a surcharge on while airlines have. hmmmm.

Our postage went up as well. And food. And repair services, and anything else you can name. Because of "gas" prices...oh yeh, our garbage pickup charges, and our sewer rates, and......
