Still on a Break but...

I had to share this with you. We received our combined phone/internet/cable bill today. I knew I had made a couple of long distance calls - dad on Father's Day (within the same province), step mom after her doctor's office (within the same province), and of course the halftime call to Red and *Asterisk during the Italy game last week (in the UK). I was a bit worried as the call was about fifteen minutes and...well...they live on the other side of the world. Pretty pricey. Needless to say I wasn't prepared for the long distance charges which appeared on our bill:

Yes, you're reading that correctly. A twelve minute phone call to the United Kingdom cost about the same as an eleven minute phone call to a town only 350KM away. It cost me a whopping 48 cents to spend 12 delightful minutes chatting with this lovely couple. I don't know how that happened or why but I'm not going to complain. Otherwise our provider might realize they made a mistake and charge us more. However, if they're only going to charge me a meagre four cents a minute to chat with folks, I can start calling everyone.

Oh, this doesn't surprise me at all. Long distance has totally come down in price over the last 10 years. When my mom lived in England she was always like, "don't call...this is costing you a fortune!" It was super cheap, however, and way cheaper than it would have been for her to call me. I get 4 cents anywhere anytime in Canada, US, and UK via a PC calling card, and it's cheap for Europe and Asia as well. Call away, baby!

Phew, I am relieved too! I did feel bad about keeping you on the phone, chatting away. How strange, though, that calling within Canada should cost only a fraction less than an international (nay, intercontinental) call. Still, like you say, don't bring it to their attention!

A good report about a cell phone company! Yay! Mostly I hear frustration!
