British Beaver Bashing

Tuesday, July 01, 2008
Just in time for Canada Day, the Daily Mail ran an article yesterday (June 30th) by Phillip Delves Broughton urging his fellow Brits to NOT buy into the hype Canada is selling. Apparently our government is trying to urge British workers (especially miners, construction workers, and medical professionals) to come and work in our fair country. However, Mr. Broughton is warning his countrymen (and women) that everything's not as rosy as we make it out to be. Harping on about our weather, boring political scene and lack of culture, he does give us the nod when it comes to country music festivals. Ooooh, thanks Phil. Score one for us. And then, he commits the ultimate Canadian sin. No, he doesn't insult our beer (in all fairness, the British are better at beer than we are...mmmm, Newcastle Pale Ale) or scoff at our nationwide Timmie's addiction. No, my fellow Canadians. He insulted....HOCKEY.

Ah yes, hockey. If you thought British sport was becoming crude and violent, try watching two teams of toothless brutes sliding around on ice and pausing every few minutes to beat the daylights out of each other. It makes the Premiership look like synchronised swimming.

I'm in a bit of a state at the moment so I'm waiting a little while before I do anything about this. If you calm down before I do, perhaps you'd like to send the paper some feedback voicing your displeasure over his trashing of our beloved nation or leave a comment after the article. Methinks ole' Phil should be a bit more careful the next time he has to enter the country on business...you never know what a Leafs' fan is bound to do. I have my suspicions that he's just a bit upset we're celebrating the day we threw off the shackles of imperialist oppression his country held over us for so long (ok, not really but it sounds good doesn't it?). In the end though, does it really matter? It IS only the Daily Mail after all ...

He likes country music festivals? I guess we shouldn't be too worried about what he thinks of us then, should we?

Happy Canada Day, Captain!

And that is one of the reasons I don't read The Daily Mail. They did mention that article in the paper reviews on TV, though, and it had me looking online to see if Asterisk and I qualify...

Country music festivals. We had one here in Oshkosh WI last week. My husband had a heck of a time doing his run for work around it.. I am sorry about that e-mail. I fell for a stupid thing I hope WC gave you the new one or else its on my profile too now. I have learned my lesson the hard way.

Speaking of the hockey, Your Oils and my Canes made a pretty decent little trade Monday. Pitkanen for Cole.

Ooooohhhhh!!! This infuriated me!! As if their workaday culture is in any way superior...pub-crawling and watching telly, anyone? And if you want dull, let's talk about CRICKET.

Fine, so our TV and our beer and our tea aren't as good. The transplants I know have no problem with that.
