Here's a Dumb Question

Wednesday, July 23, 2008
Russell posted a new review of a cafe over on Eggs, Bacon, Chips and Beans. I love this site. Full English Breakfasts (which include chips, or french fries for us North American types) as far as the eye can see. With the exception of this most recent review, sent in by one of his readers, I don't think I've seen a full English with toast. Just the eggs, bacon (back/Canadian bacon), chips and beans. Mmmm, beans. So here's my dumb question. Does it usually come with toast? Who can eat eggs unless they're sitting on top of a slice of freshly toasted white bread, yolk (always over easy thank you) gently soaking into the toast? It's important to know these things so that foreign visitors don't make a major breakfast booboo when ordering.

I might have to order his book as well.

I seem to recall having full English breakfasts with toast.

Yeah, as far as I know every 'greasy spoon' in London makes it with a slice of two of toast.

Interesting. I was told the same thing by a coworker although she said that it doesn't usually include the chips except at the "greasy spoon" type cafes. It's all so confusing. I guess whenever I end up getting over there, I'll just wing it.

Yeah, I don't think chips usually come with the traditional English brekky. From what I can remember, it was eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, and sometimes mushrooms and/or tomatoes. Egg, bacon, & chips was a different meal altogether. But...I never did eat at a "greasy spoon" unless you count the Sainsbury's cafe.

No offense to the English and Anglophiles, but that's just...ew.

I'm skeptical - french fries with breakfast? My arteries hurt just thinking about it. And white bread? Please, Captain, you're killing me here! Stop being so subversive.

Where we go, they do serve it with toast -- brown or white. And no chips. We'll take you there when you come visit!

Breakfast has to be the most confusing meal of the day. Arrrgggh. I'd gladly give up the bacon for the chips.

Barb: white bread and chips, the perfect combo. A chip butty, with lots of butter and salt is a particular family favourite. Mind you, we also make bean sandwiches. Same thing, just substitute the beans for the chips. Heaven. Our family can (and has) make a sandwich out of anything.

Red: Can we get a side of chips too, then?

They don't do chips at all in this place. Not even egg and chips, which sometimes I have a real yearning for. :(

Damn that looks good. But alas I can't have any.
