Memoirs of Hadrian

Now here's a movie I can see myself getting excited about. Although with my luck, it will be as huge a disappointment as Gladiator was (except for the brief appearance by the late Oliver Reed, naturally) or Troy despite the presence of both Sean Bean and Vincent Regan. Let's not even think about discussing Alexander shall we? Bad casting, bad story, bad all over. 300 wasn't any good either. Perhaps my standards are just too high.

As with any historical epic, there's going to be folks out there who complain incessantly about the accuracy of the subject matter. I'm willing to give filmmakers leeway with this as long as they don't change who won a particular battle or other important details. Take 300 and Troy as examples (again, I'm ingnoring Alexander). The stories were essentialy fairly accurate - the problems lay elsewhere with casting and the script/dialogue being the biggest. And in this case, the film is based on a work of fiction (which sounds like a very good read) so you have to factor in the original writer's work and any changes made by the producers/directors in order to appeal to the movie-going masses.

Sadly, according to Wikipedia, and the message board for the movie on IMDb.com, it's rumoured that Antonio Banderas might be playing Hadrian in the film. Dear god, they've ruined it already...

Ack - Alexander was TERRIBLE! I don't know if you were reading my blog 3 years ago, but it was one of my more scathing reviews. Troy was pretty bad. I haven't seen 300 yet.

But I loved Gladiator! Loved it!

I haven't heard about this Hadrian movie, but I cannot stand Antonio.

Sounds like there will be a cast of thousands so maybe there is hope yet.

I wanted to see 300 but not so sure anymore. We saw 10,000 BC and it wasnt worth seeing.

LOL - how on earth did Antonio get casted in that? I don't really know if he could pass - maybe - I always thought he was kind of a sexy little dude - maybe it was that movie with Angelina Jolie and the hot sex scene?

I agree with you. These films are always, inevitably, shit.

I haven't seen Alexander yet, because I felt that Colin Farrell looked like George Bush in the poster, and I felt that I didn't really want to spend a couple of hours of my life looking at a Bush lookalike.

Troy was only good for Eric Bana, 300 was only good for the effects, and Gladiator was forgettable. Bah.
