Archaeology News (or is it?)

Friday, August 15, 2008
Ottawa announced today that they're launching a 6-week mission (possibly extended to include 6 weeks in 2009 and also in 2010 if required) to search for (and hopefully find) the lost ships of the Franklin Expedition. They will be using sonar equipment as well as talking to Inuit oral tradition to try and trace the failed expedition. Franklin and his search for the Northwest Passage has held a fascination for me throughout my life so this is happy news to me. However ... it is not just to recover whatever remains they might be able to find. Canada also wishes to exert its sovereignty over the Arctic - much to the chagrin of the other nations. We'll see how this plays out in the next few months.
