A little history

Added a couple of photos to the ol’ Flickr account. Had them hanging on the walls of my cubicle and needed to test out the new scanner so… inappropriate use of office equipment? At least I didn’t photocopy various unclothed body parts. Going to go through my lone photo album at home tonight and see what else should be saved electronically.

First up, my mother’s wedding (her second) to the creepy phlegmy guy. This was 18 and ½ years ago. Oh god…has it been that long? Let me pull off my socks and count. Yep, that’s right. 1990. The same year I graduated from high school. Wow. Time really does fly doesn’t it? I feel old now. Anyways, I was a hottie way back when. Or at least relatively cute, back when I had still had a gorgeous head of (my own) hair. The “do” was supposed to be reminiscent of a “Gibson Girl” – mom had a theme wedding. Just wait, I think I may have a shot of my brother in a Mountie uniform. Ignore the gobs of makeup…they cake that crap on for the pictures.

That gorgeous lady beside me? That would be the mother of the bride, my Grannie (not to be confused with the Admiral, aka Grannie Dawn), Cecily. I think she was 70ish in this photo, perhaps 73. She was a strong woman, independent, opinionated, sometimes harsh but loving in her own way. She was a member of the CWAC during World War II, serving as a driver in London (explains a LOT about how she used to drive around Toronto…). I would see her two more times before she died in 1999 or 2000. I miss her. However, the Admiral looks more and more like her everyday so I catch glimpses of her now and again.

This photo is the only evidence I have that I ever managed to win a fight with my brother. Ah, the glorious spring of 1975. That’s me gloating as much as my two year old self could manage as I hang on for dear life after pinning Big Brother to that floor (note the hideous mustard coloured disco era carpet).

Perhaps it wasn’t so much winning but the fact that he let me win – the eagle-eyed amongst you might notice the faint smirk on my brother’s lips. It’s as though he’s thinking “Ok, I’ll give you this one but the rest of your life will be spent getting your butt kicked by the likes of moi”. For most of our childhood we were great friends. Then the doofus hit puberty and we fought … a lot. It wasn’t until he went off to university that we started to get along once more. Oh sure, if you ask my sister in law, she’d say we fight all the time but that’s just how we communicate – if we didn’t insult each other every chance we get, something would be very very wrong.

Stay tuned! More to come.
