Pompey the Great

Tuesday, August 12, 2008
One thing I’ll admit to being excited about is the start of football (i.e.: soccer for those of us in NA) this weekend and I’m bound and determined to pay more attention than I have been in the past. Especially now that my team, Portsmouth, is the defending FA Cup champion. Woo hoo. They play their first game of the season against Chelsea at home on Sunday. Hopefully TSN or Sportsnet will cover it. (UPDATE: it looks like Sportsnet is only showing games on Saturday mornings…crap).

To help myself get in the mood, I’m on the hunt for the perfect Pompey mug. So far, no luck, even after checking the official shop. They have a nice ½ pint glass mug that isn’t too bad and I might end up breaking down and ordering it along with a keychain. But I really want a coffee mug – and I’m being fussy. I found one that’s white with the team’s logo in blue but the shape of the mug is not what I’m looking for and the overall look of it is … blah. And of course, there was the kid’s glitter mug (I didn’t even consider it). There’s a great little import shop in the mall which I’ll probably check out when I head there in a couple of weeks (I’m currently avoiding the “back to school” crowds and I took a day off so my friend who’s off to Scotland and I can roam around unfettered by disrespectful teens before she jets off). If they don’t have one, I might be screwed. Perhaps they just don’t make the one I want…

Never fear, UK friends, I will not be sending requests for Portsmouth paraphernalia as you’re all far too generous already and shipping mugs overseas could get a bit expensive for you. No, I will set out on this quest on my own. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little rivalry going on, perhaps a small wager or two now and then. Anyone up for it? I’m game for just about anything provided it doesn’t involve Man Utd. I have to draw the line somewhere

ha, not a soccer watcher...but did interview an assistant coach for the whitecaps a few days ago about astroturf and a woman nearby gave me two tickets to the atlanata game. guess i'll be going with my daughter or her boyfriend.

maybe you'll just have to order a sticker and ply that on a mug you like then add some kind of coating to keep it on there?

FSP is on!!!!

I'm more of a quidditch fan, personally.

Arsenal, Dr. M? Alright, I'll let that go.

Scout, no doubt! I'm still on the hunt and I'll make sure to check the import store I mentioned. I have a feeling though I'll be placing an order for that glass one before Xmas though.

Oh Barbara! I never could get into it: balls with wings, fire breathing dragons, kids with clubs...bad news all around if you ask me.

I'm an Everton girl.

I'm with Scout. Get creative and make your own mug! Well, not the mug. I mean decorate an already-made mug.

It would be unique...

Football season started here too. We had our first preseason game on Monday evening and we lost our first preseason game but we gave it an all.

Newcastle has been struggling, but I'm very hopeful for this upcoming season. We're forking out the bucks to get Sentanta sports so I can see every Newcastle game. I can't wait.
