Canada Reads 2009

Tuesday, November 25, 2008
The panel and their picks for Canada Reads 2009 were announced this morning on Q. I had a quick look at the five nominees and I a couple of them frankly seemed blah and boring. However, three caught my eye and I've put in requests for them at the library: The Outlander by Gil Adamson, Mercy Among the Children by David Adams Richards, and The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill. If the lineup to get one of these books is any indication of who might win, I'd have to go with The Book of Negroes. I'm currently the 120th person in line to get one of the 9 copies. However, looks like there's another couple of dozen on order so perhaps I'll get one before Christmas but I'm not holding my breath.

While I had said last year that I was going to try and read all of the selections for 2008, I didn't even read one of them. Sheesh. This year, I'm going to make more of an effort.

They often choose the worst books for this, so I don't even pay attention anymore.

On another note, is your Yahoo been down today? My Messenger won't let me sign in and I can't load my Yahoo home page at all. It's not my internet because only Yahoo is affected. Bummer I can't check my fricking email!

I've read Mercy Among the Children - quite gritty, as I recall.
