Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I’ve seen a number of incredibly cheesy movies lately. Despite having a number of more intellectually stimulating films awaiting my viewing, I instead chose to subject my grey matter to mindless movie madness. And yet, on some level, I enjoyed each and every one of them.

First up was Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I had absolutely no desire to see this movie for a variety of reasons including but not limited to the fact that it’s from the same folks who gave us The 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked UP, two highly forgettable films, and it also included Russell Brand who I was leaning towards enjoying until his recent idiotic stunt on BBC radio. Imagine my surprise when I sat down one slow evening to watch it. What’s it about you ask? Simply put, Peter the musician is madly in love with Sarah, his tv-star girlfriend and it comes as a devastating shock to him when she dumps him. In an attempt to get over her, he heads to Hawaii which just happens to be one of her all time favourite vacation spots. Sure enough, Sarah and her new rockstar lover (played by Brand) are vacationing at the exact same resort as Peter. He makes a few awkward attempts at making Sarah jealous in the hopes that she’ll take him back and ends up finding true love instead. Not to mention the inspiration to finally write his vampire musical.

I’ll admit Brand was hilarious and perfectly cast as the sexy superstar singer, certainly one of the high points of the film as were the sexually inexperienced newlyweds. Unlike some of the other movies these particular filmmakers have brought us, the humor (while slightly on the potty side) wasn’t vulgar or disgusting. Certainly not a film for the whole family but it’s funny, touching, and will have you rooting for the underdog way before the end.

More to come.

I saw this a couple of weeks ago, actually, and thought it was entirely forgettable. Brand was great, as was the newlywed couple, but the rest of it was painful to watch. Also, too many gratuitous penis shots for my liking.

Sometimes some mindless film viewing is just what's needed.
