A year in knitting

Friday, January 01, 2010

Early in the year, I attempted (yet again) to make myself a sweater but it (yet again) didn't live up to my expectations so it was ripped out. Feeling frustrated, I turned my attention to making mittens. And make mittens I did. Above are the four pairs I finished in 2009, all of which ended up as Christmas presents. The blue/black went to a coworker - it was her first Christmas here in Alberta and her son had gone back home to live with his father so she was feeling kinda blue. The orange/black were for my mom. The 2-tone green mitts went to another co-worker, my good buddy Ms. Pooh-Pooh Pants. And the red/white, which were my first pair of Komi-style mittens went to one of the bestest blog buddies anyone could ask for, Wandering Coyote.

As I've mentioned, 2010 will be the Year of the Mitten as I attempt to make at least double the number I made last year. While I've found a plethora of fantastic patterns on the interwebby, every time I look at the Komi-style mitts I made last year, I smile. I love these geometric patterns. So...I ordered the book I used for them, Charlene Schurch's Mostly Mittens. There were a number of patterns in the book that I never got around to making and I can't find the copies of the patterns I had made so I figured I might as well buy it. Many of the mittens I'll be making this year will be from these patterns. Including, eventually, a pair for myself (gee...how often have I said that?).

2009 also saw the first of the baby blankets for one of my coworkers. There's some sort of pregnancy plague running through our office. Two other coworkers and the wife of another are all due around the same time this spring. Which means I'm also hoping to get three more baby blankets (and one puppy blanket) completed in the first few months of this year. Knitting knitting knitting...that's what I see in my future.

We've got a pregnancy thing in our office, too. It seems contagious.

I love those mittens, too. So nice! I've been eying that book and wondering about it - let me know if it's worth it!

Here's to the year of the mitten! I think 2010 will be the year of the sock for me. I'll have to post some photos of my progress.
