97. The Secret Voyage of Sir Francis Drake (Samuel Bawlf)

Friday, March 26, 2010
Yes indeed, another nonfiction book on exploration, sailing, adventure. What can I say? I'm nothing if not predictable.

Author Samuel Bawlf, a former British Columbia Cabinet Member, not only lays out the "official" record of Drake's adventures along the Pacific coast of the Americas but also explores the attempts by both the English and Spanish to confirm his claims. The final part of Bawlf's book is a recreation of the actual path he believes, based on his own research, that Drake took along the western coast of what is now the US and Canada.

An interesting read although I'm not sure what qualifications Samuel Bawlf has as a historian. The book itself seems quite well researched but as I have little knowledge about Drake or his career, I can't say how much is entirely accurate. I enjoyed the book although not mindblowing, and would recommend it.
