No Smoking for you! NEXT!

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) is pushing for a smoking ban in all public parks and playgrounds. There's a lot of concern over how the city would enforce the ban if it decides to go ahead with it. More police? By-lay officers? I'd pay for it. People go to the park or take the kids to the playground to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise, or just relax. Who wants to take a deep breath of fresh air only to gulp down a couple of lungfuls of second hand smoke? Frankly, I don't think the proposal goes far enough. Currently people are allowed to smoke outside but they have to be 5 meters from any public entrance to a building. Do you know how close that still is? It's nothing. And people usually stay under the awnings and in the corners of buildings near the doorways. I just love (cough cough!) walking through a big noxious haze to go into my office every morning. And yes, I am a former smoker so I used to be one of "those" people.

For all of those smokers who say that the proposed by-law would infringing on their civil liberities, violating thier right to smoke... you can bite me. What about my right to walk down the street without risking developing cancer because of your actions? Or my niece and nephew to play in their local park without picking up used cigarette butts every time they scoop some sand? I say keep the cigarettes in your own homes or cars (unless you have children). Better yet, ban cigarettes altogether. Considering all the health risks that we KNOW are a result of smoking such as cancer and emphysema (which my maternal grandfather died of thanks to a lifetime of smoking), they should be illegal.
