What a Waste

This was the headline of the Edmonton Sun today. You see, Edmonton City Council, in all its wisdom, has decided to spend $160K on singing recycle bins. I'll give you a moment to mull that one over.

"SINGING" recycle bins. Not using the money to help with roadwork, building playgrounds, cleaning up the streets, or helping the homeless. Nope, our municipal government has decided the money was best used to have recycle bins serenade us city-dwellers with the blues. Does anyone else think this is a bad idea? Or better yet, a stupid idea? While I agree that more has to be done in terms of informing the public about what can and cannot be recycled, this is not the way to go about it. What about clearly labelled signs, with pictures on and/or beside the bins? Sending out pamphlets or other information packages to residents? Commercials? Fun, educational programs in schools to get kids excited about recycling?

Here's another idea. Bear with me folks, it might be a bit radical. I suggest more recycle bins on city streets, in the malls, public buildings, LRT and bus stations. Have our civic leaders make a show of recycling whenever possible. Get local sports and media celebrities doing commercials encouraging folks to recycle. Frankly, the solutions seem painfully obvious to me but then again what do I know? Perhaps spending more than 3 times my annual salary on singing recycle bins is the right way to go.

I wonder how long it will be before somebody hacks those sensors and the replaces the music files....?

And I thought government was crazy down here - this one needs a special award! Maybe if I wrote the council a letter, they would send the money to help clean oil off birds and turtles - the ones that managed to live through the mess?
