Sons of Anarchy

As you may have guessed, I spent the weekend parked in front of the television watching various World Cup matches. However, that was not all I did. Plenty of cat snuggles, the occasional burst of energy expended on the treadmill, and more television. Yes, it was a relaxing weekend at Chez Swiftsure. It’s been a little while since Lost ended and I finished off all six seasons of Oz, and five seasons of The Wire. I needed something new to fill the void these television gems have left within me and sure enough…I found it. Has anyone else had the pleasure of riding with the Sons of Anarchy? If you haven’t, I highly recommend you check it out. Another amazing program from the FX channel who also gave us Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck, and The Shield.

Sons of Anarchy focuses on the lives of a close-knit outlaw motorcycle club operating in Charming, a fictional town in Northern California. The show centers on protagonist Jackson "Jax" Teller, the Vice President of the club who begins questioning the club and himself after his son is born and he finds a box of journals and photos belonging to his father (one of the founding members of the club). Led by Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman in a role I finally enjoy him in), the cast also includes Katey Sagal as his fiesty wife (and mother to Jackson) and Tommy Flanagan (sigh) as one of the club’s top ranking members. Along with the violent crimes, back door dealings, and secret inner workings of the club, the program also explores the family relations and personal struggles of the members, their wives, and their children. Other than the disappointing inclusion of Drea de Matteo (of Sopranos fame) as Jackson’s junkie ex-wife (ooooh big stretch!), I absolutely loved this program and ended up watching the entire first season in two days (yes, I have a thing for bikers...). Katey Sagal is outstanding and has come a long way from the ditzy airhead she played on Married with Children so many years ago.

Season 1 is currently on DVD and Season 2 will be released in August. Season 3 will be airing on FX this fall.

Has anyone else noticed how the best shows out there are not coming from the big networks (CBS, NBC, ABC)? It’s coming from cable channels like FX, HBO, and AMC (home of Mad Men and Breaking Bad). Network television… the end of the world is nigh.

My brother & SIL have been going on and on about how excellent Sons of Anarchy is, but I have yet to get around to watching it! Your post is just more motivation for me to do so!

I am curious about a show coming out called "The Glades" or "The Glade" or something like that on A&E starting July 11; the ads look intriguing. I have a TV post of my own rattling around in my brain; I should get on that!

I dunno about new shows - I just watch Coronation Street. Almost 50 years and still going! Kinda like myself....

WC: I'm intrigued by the commercials for The Glades as well. And you should listen to your brother/SIL...I think you'd enjoy S.o.A.

Mr. A: No, haven't heard of it but will check it out.

NWT: I haven't been watching Corrie St. for about 6 or 7 months now. What have I missed?
