The Great Popcorn Survey

Mom ran out of microwave popcorn the other night. Ewwwww. Microwave popcorn. Her Friday night dinners consist of nothing else. Butter flavoured microwave popcorn covered in more melted butter. Me? I'll eat it if I really want popcorn but I try to avoid it if I can. I got a hankering for some popped corn this weekend and decided to make some on the stove. Ahhh, childhood memories of popcorn so greasy with oil and melted butter that it would turn a paper bag see through. Yeah, good times. Anyways, it got me thinking. What is my alltime favourite popcorn? To be honest, I really LOVE the buttersalt flavour from Kernels - its just like movie popcorn except its better. You know what I mean.

Popcorn is occupying my thoughts a lot lately, thinking of all the different ways I've enjoyed it over the years. We used to eat those crappy stove top tinfoil Jiffy Pop thingies that always burned. Mom used to make wicked popcorn on the stove in oil (see above) that she used to bring with us when we went to the theatre (when you were still allowed to bring in outside food). There were my airpopper days in high school and university. I've bought microwaved popcorn but I've never really enjoyed it. Theatre popcorn is hit or miss. And then there's the question of butter/margarine/butter flavoured topping/plain. We used to string it on a thread and needle and hang it off the tree ... however, I don't recommend this tradition if you have cats or dogs. They both seem to love popcorn. We also used to make it when we went camping - we had a special cage thingy that you placed over the campfire and it would pop up. Not the best flavour but interesting. Speaking of flavour, for me that's a big NO. Sure, I know some of you love the caramel corn, or the kettle corn (hack hack yuck). Some places even offer dill pickle or jalapeno flavours. For me, its best with some margarine and a bit of salt (if its home-popped).

All this popcorn pondering has me wondering what the rest of you think. Therefore, I give you a survey. What is your favourite popcorn? I've added the survey to the sidebar. Popcorn - my mother in law loves it. Her dog loves it too. My personal favourite used to be microwaved kettle corn in a bag. The Double Butter popcorn from Kernals is always a treat. But I have to say my favourite is microwave popped corn with a sprinkling of coarse sea salt and a light drizzling of fresh lime juice. Try it! You'll be pleasantly surprised.

I got myself a Whirly-Pop and a huge jar of Orville Redenbacher, and I've become a stove-popped convert. I use canola oil for mine - and a half a cup of unpopped kernels, which is probably an obscene amount of calories. But it's only once a week, and Friday nights would not be the same without a giant bowl of popcorn.

Topping-wise, I'm hooked on Club House dill pickle. I luuuurv it. I did buy a butter/salt topping from Wabash Valley Farms (the same people who make the Whirley-Pop), and it's good...but I love the dill pickle so much more.

I voted air popped because that's what I grew up on and what I love to this day. When I was on Weight Watchers, I did microwave popcorn because you could calculate the points easier, but ultimately, I knew it was bad for me and so I went back to air popped. I love lots of butter & salt but I like other toppings. Right now, I have this wicked hickory smoked sea salt that is awesome on popcorn! When I was at UVic, the theatre there had engevita yeast as a topping and I love that, too. So good. I also used to love seasoned salt on popcorn but I never buy that anymore...

When in uni, I used to have a big bowl of popcorn on nights where I was so bagged I couldn't be bothered cooking and it was great. Sometimes I still do that.

I have a microwave popcorn maker but I find it burns too easily so I'm donating it to the thrift store.

Well, to start with, we don't have a microwave at Anchovy World Headquarters. In fact, I've never owned one. Once in a while, we'll make popcorn and we do it on the stove in a little oil, and it is most tasty. Melted butter is the topping of choice, but a few drops of soy sauce is nice too.

I grew up with oil-on-the-stove popcorn and still like it, but I way prefer boring ol' air-popped popcorn. The dill pickle topping Heather mentioned is awesome, tho, and a sprinkle of worchester or soy sauce is nice too.

Okay...this post is not helping. I had a root canal today, and once I thawed out and the painkillers started to kick in, I had a craving for popcorn! I was too freaked out by the tooth trauma today to risk it though. Then, I came to your blog and the first thing I see is what I'm craving.

(p.s. I like my air popped popcorn with melted Earth Balance -- the vegan's answer to butter -- nutritional yeast and salt and pepper.)
