Klimbing Kilimanjaro

Mountain climbing holds an odd fascination for me. I marvel at those fortunate few who have braved (and conquered) the peaks of Everest, K2, Kilimanjaro and other “lesser” mountains on this little blue marble we call home. It’s something I will likely never attempt but am in awe of those that do. One of my life’s dreams is to climb one of the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. The chances of me actually succeeding are beyond slim but in my attempt to improve my health, I’m doing the next best thing. I will attempt a “virtual” climb of ALL SEVEN SUMMITS, taking one step for every one foot of elevation.

Here is a list of the peaks I'll be "climbing", their height and the order in which I'll be attempting them.

I expect that I’ll reach my goal in two weeks. That’s just over the recommended 10,000 steps per day. Totally do-able. I’ll be recording my progress on the right and announcing each time I’ve “summited” another peak. I’m extremely excited! Feel free to climb with me if you’d like.

The inspiration behind this little venture was a woman I met at a work seminar recently. We ended up sitting beside each other and I overheard her talking to one of her coworker about a fitness challenge their area is sponsoring. They call it “Steps to Everest” and they had to sign up as members of a team (up to 6 members) and track their steps on a pedometer for a month. The first team to reach the “summit” (250,000 steps) would receive gift certificates. I thought this was a great idea and got a few more details over the course of the day and then emailed the event and fitness committees in our department. The response I received was fantastic! However, it takes forever to get things done in our office and I’m hoping to move on to bigger and better things soon so I decided to undertake my very own challenge.

If this is a success, I’ll be lining up a new challenge to keep me occupied and focused on a goal. I’ve already got a few ideas on the back burner but I’m always interested in hearing what you think. Since I’m using both the bike and the elliptical, challenges involving distance are perfect.
