We are going on a summer holiday

I took a holiday today and it felt wonderful.  Not that work has been overly stressful; it just was a much needed day off.  Despite what you might be thinking though I did not spend the day reclining in front of the telly, eating salted caramels from Purdys.  I would have LOVED to do that (mmmm salt + caramel = love) but there were things that needed doing.

My morning was spent cleaning the bathroom and knitting. I was not looking forward to the cleaning but once I got started, I became possessed by some type of domestic demon and went on a cleaning rampage. To be honest, around our apartment, this Exorcist-inspired cleaning fit really should happen more often. I scrubbed, sponged, soaked and soaped. My tub and shower are now spotless. Afterwards I "relaxed" by getting a jump on my Christmas knitting list. It's bigger than I had originally thought and figuring out when I'd find the time to get it all done before the holidays has been causing me to panic just slightly. There's a reason I don't commit to making things for people who ask me to!!! However, I went against my better judgement and agreed to make 2 pairs of plain mittens for a coworker without really considering how much time was left before I needed to have everything finished. However, I'm thinking I should be able to get them done (they'll be the last thing I do) but barely.

Having said that, I outdid myself today and doubled the goal I had set myself yesterday. It helped that I was watching/listening to episodes of Boardwalk Empire while I stitched away. Have you seen it yet? Its not jam packed full of action like some other HBO shoes but its a great look at prohibition-era Atlantic City and its ties to some of America's most famous gangsters. I love that Steve Buscemi has his own series and that it also includes Michael Kenneth Williams from The Wire.

After lunch I tackled the balcony, throwing away dying plants, moving furniture around and sweeping up dust, dead flowers and leaves and the occasional ciggie butt from the upstairs neighbours.  I wanted to sit outside later on to read but there was a very persistent hornet or wasp that would not leave me alone.  Little striped bastard.

All in all a pretty darned good day.  You can keep your Mondays or Fridays off to make a long weekend; give me a day off in the middle of the week anytime!

Midweek vacations are the very best kind. They are also great when you have a lot of errands to run, because the stores are relatively empty.
