Its been awhile

Has it really been a week and a half since my last post?  I thought it had only been a few days.  I guess time flies when you're having fun.  After a slow start at the "new" job, I'm really getting into the swing of things around the office and enjoying my job.  The people, as I've mentioned before, are great and I have far more freedom than I've experienced in the last five years.  Its incredible to go from a totalitarian regime to a free and open mini-society.  Being able to have a wee whenever I feel the urge, get a cup of coffee, or take a break whenever I need to and not have to get permission from anyone first is life changing.  You think I'm exaggerating?  You should just ask my former coworkers who've also moved onto to better climates - they'll tell you the same thing.

One of the wonderful  things about my current office?  There is great sense of fun.  A genuine recognition that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.  Working in the healthcare industry now, its also refreshing to have an employer who genuinely seems concered about the health of their employees and provides opportunities (during work hours) to get exercise and promote healthy lifestyles.  Next week, in fact, my office is offering times both in the morning and afternoon to try out all sorts of fun and healthy activities:  bellydancing, yoga, brisk walks, etc.  Have I died and gone to office heaven?  I'm getting more and more convinced each and every day.

Christmas Party Preparation
When I first started here I was "volun-told" that I was going to be my branch's representative on our office social committee.  Sigh...here we go again I thought.  At the old office, I had quit the committee they had because they refused to listen to new ideas, no one wanted to do anything, and it was all about raising money to put on the same old events year after year.  Was I in for a surprise.  We've had more (successful) events in the few months I've been here than we would do in an entire year at the old office.  Case in point, I'm in the process of putting together the activity for our annual Christmas luncheon.  And I get to use work time to do it.  Where else (other than perhaps Santa's workshop) would I be allowed to spend an hour or two googling Christmas Trivia and searching for cute cartoony reindeer?
You want it? Come and get it!
I'm so content with my work life right now, that I'm throwing myself into the whole "fun" atmosphere.  Even though its far from my favourite holiday (ranking only slightly higher than Valentine's and a smidge below St. Patrick's Day), I've embraced Halloween this year.  I'm baking cookies for our potluck, I've decorated my office in spiderwebs and creepy spiders, and I've put out the obligatory (and well stocked) candy dish guarded by Ratsputin shown above.  If he likes you, he won't bite.  Try to take too many though?  You might have trouble typing tomorrow.

All in all life has been fairly good these days.  Mom and I have gone swimming 4 weeks in a row now and we're loving it!  Mind you, we won't be going tomorrow - mom's feeling a bit poorly and we have to rest up for the football game that evening.  Edmonton is playing Winnipeg!!!  Should be a great game.  Edmonton, I believe, has guaranteed themselves a spot in the playoffs but a couple more wins would be a great way to end the season.

Another 4 week milestone?  I've stuck with Weight Watchers and am seeing some success.  Over the past 4 weeks, I've lost just a touch under five pounds.  A drop in the bucket yes, but a damn fine start.  I'm really having fun planning out what I'm going to eat each day - why did I not have this much fun on my own???  Money well spent, I say.

The only thing I'm not thrilled about lately?  Having to miss (again) Barb the Bad Tempered Zombie's 2nd annual blogger convention taking place in Vancouver this year.  Grrrrrr.

You were definitely missed at Communique this year, Karen! I thought of you often and wished you could be there with us.

Well done you with the Weight Watchers. Keep it up. And good luck with the football. I follow the Montreal Allouetes online to annoy a friend of mine who supports the Stamps...but I have no idea whats going on on the field!

Your workplace sounds awesome! I'd be up for a bit of a commute if they are looking for someone... Okay, perhaps not quite that long of a commute.

I sure wish you could have joined us at Communique this year. Montreal next year?
