A New Year Begins

Sunday, January 01, 2012
2012 has officially begun.  Yee haw.  Wa-hoo.  Meh?  I'm looking forward to a new year full of possibilities.  Just having trouble finding much energy at the mo'.  No, I was not whooping it up with crowds of drunken revellers last night.  To be honest, I was (in typical London's Fog fashion) asleep by 8PM.  Didn't even wake up to the sound of fireworks downtown.  Before going to bed last night, I did manage to take my last picture of 2011...

Goodbye 2011 - you won't be missed that much.
Sorry for the shot of my pathetic clothing collection in the closet behind me.  I was too tired to think of closing the door before snapping the photo.

Anyways...

The new year started off EARLY!  Cats and I were awake at 3:15ish this morning.  Ugh although I'm getting used to it which scares me.  Headed down to the mini-gym in our building just past five and had a great 40 minute bike ride.  I tried to use the weight machine (honestly, I really did!) but it seems that someone's busted one stack of weights so you can't adjust the amount lifted - essentially all or nothing.  I'm no weakling but I don't think I'm ready to bench press more than my own body weight.  I resigned myself to not lifting any weights this morning (awwww....bummer).  However, I might invest in one of those resistance band thingies to use at home.

Healthy-ish breakfast:  fried 'tatoes with peppers and onions, topped with salsa and some shredded cheddar.  I took a picture although its not very good - my camera keeps shifting between 2 settings although the knob is set to the one I always use.  The result?  A crap shoot when it comes to whether or not your picture turns out.

It tasted better than the picture makes it look
You know how I set myself a bunch of goals (non-resolutions) the other day?  Well, I took the first step to meeting one of them this morning.  I signed up for an online dating site.  One of my Twitter/Blogger buddies, @FatGirlvsWorld, uses it and it doesn't cost anything, so I figured what the hell, why not.  Maybe I'll make a new friend.  Maybe I'll find Mr. London's Fog.  Maybe I'll have my heart crushed and my fragile ego destroyed forever.  You don't know unless you try, right?!

Speaking of goals, I said I was going to avoid Jack Lalanne's list of 11 "foods". Um...I fubar'd that this morning without realizing it when I had a couple of the absolutely amazing M&S shortbread cookies that the lovely Paola sent me for Christmas.  Oops.  However, after looking over the list again, I realized I don't really most of the foods on his list.  At least not regularly.  The one exception, as I'm sure you all know, is soda pop.  So, that is my goal for this week:  no Coke!  I pity my coworkers.  By Wednesday, I'm liable to rip someone's head off if they ask for a paperclip!  On a serious note, that should be a big sign to anyone out there!  If you have a massive mood change when you don't get a regular dose of your favourite vice (coffee, sugar, soda, chips, fast food, etc), that should be a wake up call that those foods really aren't good for you.  Sadly, I know soda's no good for me but I loves it anyways.  Damn, I want one right now...

Making dinner tonight for mommikins and I, putting my new Cooking Light cookbook to use.  On the menu?  Orzo Salad (substituting with couscous) with Chickpeas, Dill and Lemon, and Lemon and Oregano-rubbed grilled chicken.  Should be delicious.  Or not.  You don't know unless you try, right?!  Hey, why does that sound so familiar...?

I'm adding two more small goals to my list:  blogging more and taking more photos.  These two go hand in hand.  I'd like to increase my readership and I've done some reading on how to accomplish this over the weekend.  Main points?  Blog regularly/be consistent, blogs are a visual medium as well as a written one so use images/pictures often, and plenty of linkage.  That's not to say that I should link to a page on the history of the paperclip because I mentioned it above, or to the Coca Cola website because I'm very obviously addicted to their product and wouldn't turn down some free stuff (here me, Coke folks?), or basically insert a link to every other word I type.  Thats excessive, ridonkulous, and idiotic, and will quickly turn readers off.  However, make sure to link to other blogs that you talk about or mention, and by all means link to people you should be crediting for certain information.  For example, I need to link to Monica over at Run:Eat:Repeat.  It was her FitBloggin presentation on Blogging 101 that inspired me to try and increase my readership.  You can also find her on Twitter.

That's it for now.  Must run - time to take down the Christmas tree and pack it away for the next 11 months.  Hope you have a great start to 2012!
